Intro:

Many car enthusiasts always love compact hatchbacks. Because it blends the SUVs utility and the agility of a car. It gives the best of both worlds. Many of them were pleased to hear that the Kia was making hatchback version of the Kia K4 sedan. In 2025 K4 Hatchback is officially out. It looks fun, it’s  drives fun, comes in fun colors, and it likes push hard in the corners.

Kia borrows many of the styling cues from the sedan, which is loved by many fans, but cuts the rear off at an angle. They not just move the trunk panel to the top of the rear window. They cut almost 11 inches off the sedan’s body behind the rear and add some material for extra rigidity. So the hatchback is bit heavier than the sedan. So the angled Doom-style lights make it more sporty and amplifying the futuristic look.

Design:

Although most of the design is the same as the sedan, like the doors. The roof of the hatchback is a bit different and slightly 0.4 inches taller than sedan. It gives an extra inch of headroom. It has similar small window design at the rear doors, which looks sporty and blends quite nicely with the D-pillar and floating-roof line.

Many argue about the rear design, but when you view from the rear the hatchback looks much clean and sharp than the Kia K4 Sedan . Kia focused on the design and remove the awkward C-pillar. But they cut the overall length 11 inches without touching the wheelbase. That means the rear legroom 38 inches is still there.

However, the K4’s hood look long and droopy because its design is not changed, and fit with the shorter. Boxier body of the Kia K4 hatchback, but its hardly noticed and overall it’s a very good-looking hatchback. The lower trims come with nice-looking 17-inch wheels with diamond-cut accents.

The GT-Line comes with larger 18-inch wheels and some exterior changes. GT-Line trims also get sound-absorbing foam in the tires. The new taillight design is used on the hatch, and the thin strip of LEDs looks more sharper. GT-Lines also offers projector LED headlights. The chunky fender flares above the wheels give more aggressive stance. For more clean elegant look it hides its rear wiper, which is usually a luxury car feature.

Drivetrain:

Kia K4 hatch is pretty much the same as the sedan and use same mechanical hardware. Also the engine options are same lower trim gets a naturally-aspirated. 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine running the Atkinson cycle and producing 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque and power transmit through an intelligent variable transmission, which is a CVT.

The new unit claims to use 1.4L/100km fuel and amount of CO2, but the new engine is also 2kW/12lb-ft down compared to the old one. Though the automatic is definitely smooth and goes a long way. On the other hand top of the line trim comes with the engine. Which is the most fun to drive a turbocharged 1.6L 4-cylinder making 190 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Top GT-Lines also get a fully independent rear suspension and bigger brakes all around, while the bigger stoppers only in the rear making its rear discs slightly larger.

Kia K4 Performance:

The 1.6-liter is most fun to drive but has a small amount of lag from a standstill. It’s not very noticeable, but the boost catches quickly. While there’s no manual in any trim level and the eight-speed is fast and accurate, providing smooth shifts from a stop. You can shift gear using the steering-wheel-mounted paddles.

Kia K4 Base models get 17-inch wheels, one inch larger than the sedan and they provide enough grip. On the GT and Turbo models, you get 18-inch wheels and they come with all-season tires that have a strip of foam inside to absorb the shocks and road noise. Under hard acceleration, the engine never short on power even at 6000-rpm and there is no struggle in high rev line.

The exhaust note is good but very mild. Engine sound is low and never bother you that alone gives it a more refined and mature appeal. Suspension tuning is in the perfect zone. It’s not too stiff nor too soft and body roll is kept in control. The base versions get a torsion-beam suspension. But the upper trims got more sophisticated multilink independent setup.

Ride quality is not very firm due to the suspension setup, which we told earlier. The suspension absorbs bumps and bad roads pretty easily. In the Kia K4, road noise is well insulated and hardly filter into the cabin. The car best performs in the Sport mode, and the power delivery is smooth with a linear torque output.

Sports mode also makes the steering bit heavy and tight while gives little extra feedback but not much. The transmission holds rev for longer, so you can back into the power band more faster and push the steering’s limits without any risk. It’s not the fastest car on the world, just quick enough to be fun. In the challenging corner, it shows an easy control and agility with strong handling.

Grip from the tires is high, and the steering gives accuracy and good feedback. The larger brake rotors give good stopping power and progressive braking. The updated 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine and ‘IVT’ transmission combo is better than the old one. Throttle response is much sharper and more accurate.

The CVT shifts silently and rarely needs very high revs like traditional CVTs. Meaning it keeps the engine revs quickly and holds less and settles into a muted cruise once it shifts. Drive assistance systems perform quite well, like the adaptive cruise control, blind-spot assist and Lane Following Assist all work good. The Highway Driving Assist offers a smart semi-autonomous driving capability with the assisted lane changes. The blind spot view monitor and side cameras works good during parking.

Kia K4 Capability:

Kia is continue deliver more bold design and advanced technology at a very competitive price. It has also a smart move to borrow the K4 sedan’s platform. As it was the brand one of the best selling model in the world and attracted many new owners.

Whereas the sedan is more of a practical and family car. The Kia K4 hatchback offers a urban car with active fun and weekends escape. If anyone who need a car for fun with space for their bags and other sports-related activities, the K4 is perfect.

The K4 Hatchback comes with a Yakima roof rack and bike rack fitted from the factory, and it also offers hatch-mounted tent. The Kia K4 is very quiet inside, only some road noise at higher speeds. It makes driving smooth and very easy.

The brake pedal and shifters are strong and easy to modulate. Both gear boxes are  impressed by their responsiveness, and they quickly and smoothly shifts. The driving position is very comfortable and the forward visibility is also very good. The rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera are also very helpful.

Kia K4

Verdict:

Kia doesn’t really want to reinvent the small cars with Kia K4. It beats out competitors in terms of price, performance, and looks. It’s very cheap to buy. The new engine is cheaper to run, and the safety systems and infotainment actually works very good.

It carries the futuristic design language of the sedan. It blends beautifully with the hatchback bodystyle, fun colors, and a sporty powertrain that’s easy to drive and fast. It’s like the sedan however, the performance and the new engine are bit better and more practical, but an hybrid drivetrains can give more efficiency and cut the fuel use in half.

Kia once again proves that they know how to deliver a fully loaded car at a jaw dropping price.
